XXIV Copa del Rey - King’s Cup

23/07/05

The Copa del Rey Regatta can be considered if not the most, on of the most important sport events of the many that Palma hosts during the year. This year is its 24th Edition and will take place between July the 30th and August the 7th.

Created as one more trophy in the Campeonato Internacional del Mediterráneo it has became, with the help of the Palma's Bay incredible conditions and wonderful situation, one of the most importants races.

The Real Club Nautico de Palma will be during these days the epicentre of sailing in Europe and home to the best crews in the world.

The course will be the same for all four categories (IMS 500, 600, 670 and Transpac 52), and the only difference will be the distance to be raced in each of these categories. Barlovento, Sotavento and the offshore regatta are the races to be held provided the weather permits, although the onshore wind tends to be a faithful visitor to Palma Bay, making the regatta one of the most prestigious of the Mediterranean and even the more spectacular.

Caixa Galicia has won the last three editions of the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) and is to be considered the favourites. However, the level on this competition is really in the top and predictions are more than difficult.

Following to last year’s addition of an extra class, the IMS 670, in 2005 the newcomers will be the Transpac 52, a class that is not represented by any Boatyard, or commercial brand and that will be an important feature of this year’s competition.

The presence of the Spanish and other royal families, side by side with VIP celebrities, ensure that the jetties of the Real Club Náutico de Palma are a seething mass of glamour and journalists that open the city of Palma up to the world.
