St Peterís Singers choir in Mallorca

The Leeds-based chamber choir St Peter’s Singers can be heard in concert on the beautiful Balearic island of Mallorca from 25-28 October 2009. This will be the choir’s second overseas tour, following an acclaimed trip to Romania in November 2007, and concerts in the Catholic Cathedrals of Sibiu and Bucharest. The Singers are privileged and deeply honoured to have been invited to give their final recital of the tour in the stunning surroundings of Palma's La Seu Cathedral.

In Mallorca, the Singers will be based in the lovely coastal resort of Puerto Pollença at the north of the island. The choir will be performing in four of the island’s finest churches, conducted by Dr Simon Lindley (Music Director since the choir’s foundation in 1977) and accompanied by its renowned organist David Houlder. All four churches have excellent pipe organs that will also enable David's skills as a soloist to be fully demonstrated.

Each hour-long recital takes the audience on a journey through over 500 years of sacred choral music from British and Continental traditions. 2009 is a very significant anniversary year for five great composers - Purcell (1659-1695), Handel (1685-1759), Haydn (1732-1809), Mendelssohn (1809-1847) and Elgar (1857-1934) – and each recital includes works by three of these composers.

A comment on Facebook from a friend of the Singers who now lives and works in Mallorca was the spur to action; thanks to an enormous amount of goodwill and assistance from several friends as well as from the hosts in each of the venues, things have come to fruition remarkably quickly.

The Singers’ Music Director, Dr Simon Lindley, said: “All our musicians are greatly looking forward to the chance of singing in some of Mallorca’s most glorious sacred venues and taking the opportunity to celebrate in real style the anniversaries of so many great musicians, including England’s own Henry Purcell and Sir Edward Elgar.”

About the St Peter's Singers: St Peter's Singers is a mixed choir of about fifty voices based in the City of Leeds, directed by Dr Simon Lindley. For over thirty years the Singers have enjoyed a close relationship with Leeds Parish Church (St Peter-at-Leeds), where the majority of our concerts and liturgical appearances take place. The Choir also performs at many other venues in and around Leeds as well as further afield, including Leeds Town Hall, Derby Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral and Worcester Cathedral. York Minster has also been the venue for four memorable presentations in recent years, including the most recent 60th birthday celebration concert for Dr Simon Lindley entitled ‘the composers conduct’. This presentation included guest conductors and composers Dr Francis Jackson CBE, Dr Donald Hunt, Philip Moore as well as Dr Lindley himself.
