During June the 23rd & the 24th Mallorca will be celebrating the "Fiestas de Sant Joan" (Saint John the Baptist).
The first fiestas of the summer are celebrated on June the 24th, but is during the night on the 23rd when we have one of the most spectacular (at least the most famous and the one that likes more) celebrations. During the shortest night of the year when light triumphs over darkness, summer's equinox, all municipalities celebrate the beginning of the summer.
In Palma, it was usually celebrated at the Parque del Mar, the park down the Cathedral, with the fire show of the Nit de Foc by the local company Iguana Teatre, with demons running and fireworks. However, and since last year by a council's polemic decision, this fiesta is now held at the Ciutat Jardi beach and, unfortunately, we have no more fireworks spectacle.
Anyway, this is one of the best and biggest fiestas in the city and you can not miss it if you are visiting the island. Live music, drinks & fire bones. More than 30.000 people will be at this beach celebrating the beginning of the summer period.
This old ancient traditions has some rituals where the essential features are the sun, fire and water. If you want to be up to what is happening, just do not forget to get a paper and write there some desires: at twelve o'clock, everybody will fire these papers on the fire bones with the hope to have them accomplished.
If after reading this you decide to go there, you have to keep in mind some points. Go early, do not wait till 23:00 as many people does or most probably you will not arrive, as the streets will be packed of cars and you can easily be stopped at a clogging for a long time. By the way, arriving late means you will no spot at all for you in the sand. Go with some drinks and food on a bag and take a towel with you, as everybody does. And if you drink, do not take your car, as it will be plenty of police doing alcohol test at the exit. By the way, it will be safer for you and your friends. Enjoy.
