Set on a beach and surrounded by gardens and pine and oak trees, Hotel Formentor is known to be one of Mallorca's best hotels. Its reputation has bypassed frontiers and it has been the choice of celebrities such as Helmut Kohl, Elisabeth Taylor or the Dalai Lama.
(from their website)
The hotel is built on over twelve million square metres of land: beyond the Port of Pollença, starting at the look-out point of Es Colomer, the property covers the whole promontory, four thousand two hundred acres almost completely surrounded by sea. This property has passed through many hands until 1646, when it was acquired by the Costa family who retained it for nearly three centuries.
In 1928, after complex negotiations, all of Formentor (pines, beaches, coves and fields) was sold for little over half a million pesetas. The buyer was Adam Diehl, an Argentinian visionary who was to build the fine hotel we now know. His original intention was to make a home for himself and his wife, where he could also put up his friends, poets and painters from all over the Continent. As chance would have it, a fire destroyed a pine grove just behind where this residence was to be built, and a friend of his, the painter Tito Cittadini, suggested to him the idea of raising a hotel on that spot. Here he could lodge not only his friends but also a select clientele that would help to cover the costs and "might well bring in a profit".
Under the idealistic direction of Diehl, the Hotel Formentor introduced architectural forms unheard of on Mallorca. In early 1936, burdened by debts and having lost the hotel to the Credito Balear, Adam Diehl left Mallorca. A few months later the Civil War broke out, fateful times dawned for Spain and for Europe. It took nearly twenty years before tourism took off once more as an industry. Not until 1954 did the name of Formentor become linked to that of Buadas. Juan Buadas was one of a group of experienced Majorcan businessmen who took an interest in the hotel. A great lover of the area, don Juan soon came to be seen as champion of Formentor. His sons Tomeu and later Miquel shared their father’s admiration for Formentor and promoted it as a site for great events, bringing to life its founder’s dream of making it a place where great talents converged.
All of this above has been, in fact, a great present to all Mallorca lovers as the zone has been kept (a part from the hotel area) unspoilt during al these years, keeping in there all what the nature and the mediterranean have given to the island of Mallorca.
Now, the hotel has had a facelift and the guests rooms have completely berrn renovated and equipped with new technological advances to ensure comfort and a pleasant stay.
The beach down the Hotel Formentor is clean and wonderful, and offers as many faciities as you can expect in a hotel of its category. Many yacht owners stops on its waters to enjoy the wonders of this area.
There are three restaurants in this luxury complex offering quality Mediterranean and international cuisine to its guest: El Colomer, El Pi and Platja Mar. Keep in mind to book in advance.
Those looking to organize an important meeting in Mallorca will find in the Formentor Hotel the perfect place. It not only offers meeting and conference rooms but a Cinema in that will make everything even more easy and pleasant to these attending meetings and presentations there.
